Sign Installation: What to Expect from Site Survey to Power-On

Design and fabrication get the attention, but installation is what turns a finished sign into a permanent, safe part of your building. A sign that's beautifully built and poorly mounted is a liability — one that comes loose in a windstorm, leaks at the wall penetration, or gets red-tagged for an electrical issue an inspector catches on day one.

Here's what a professional sign installation actually involves, from the site survey through the final walk-through.

Step 1 — Site survey

Before install day, a technician confirms wall substrate, structural capacity, existing electrical (for lit signs), and access — is a ladder enough, or does this need a boom truck or crane? For freestanding signs, the survey also checks for underground utilities before any excavation.

Step 2 — Mounting method by sign type

  • Wall and blade signs: through-bolts, standoffs, or a mounting rail into structural framing — never just adhesive or drywall anchors on anything of real weight
  • Channel letters: flush-mount on standoffs, raceway-mount, or a backer panel, chosen for wall substrate and wiring access
  • Monument signs: excavated and engineered concrete foundation, often with rebar reinforcement, sized to local frost depth and soil conditions
  • Pylon signs: drilled or excavated footing sized by a structural engineer for wind load at the sign's height

Step 3 — Equipment and crew

Most wall and blade sign installs run off a ladder or scissor lift. Anything above about 20 feet, or heavy, typically calls for a boom truck. Freestanding sign foundations often need an excavator or backhoe. A shop that owns its own fleet — rather than renting or subcontracting for every job — moves faster and controls the schedule.

Step 4 — Electrical hookup

Illuminated signs need a licensed electrician for the final hookup, and in almost every Washington jurisdiction, a separate electrical permit and inspection from the sign permit itself. This step is exactly where installs using unlicensed crews run into trouble — an inspector will red-tag a sign wired without the proper permit, even if the sign itself is otherwise done correctly.

Step 5 — Final walk-through

A completed install gets checked for level, secure fastening, clean sealant at every penetration, and — for lit signs — full power-on with even illumination across every letter or panel. Any debris or equipment marks on the property get cleaned up before the crew leaves.

Realistic install timelines

  • Wall or blade sign (existing sign built and permitted): half a day to one day
  • Illuminated channel letter set: one day, plus scheduling around electrical inspection
  • Monument sign with new foundation: 1–3 days, plus concrete cure time before the sign mounts
  • Pylon sign with engineered footing: 3–7 days including excavation, footing cure, and crane-set
